The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank (ADB) approved in Tunis, November 29, 2011, a donation of more than 4.5 million euros to the Republic of Rwanda, to finance the project “sustainable management of woodlands and restoration of natural forests of Rwanda”. This project is funded by the Fund for the Congo Basin Forest (CBFF).The project “sustainable management of woodlands and restoration of natural forests of Rwanda” will contribute to reducing deforestation and poverty in the area of the Congo Basin in Rwanda, covering an estimated area of 30 percent of the country.The expected effects of the project are the increase of forest cover in eight districts in the south, the coordinated management of public and private woodlands in these districts, improvement of household incomes bordering natural forest, and finally establishing the basic conditions necessary for Rwanda to be eligible for benefits of carbon markets and payment of ecosystem services.
